Proposal for cycle path in Hawkes Bay - any comments for Opus?

I have been given your name as someone to talk to about the proposed Waitangi Bridge replacement. As you may be aware, the replacement for the bridge which crosses the Tutaekuri River is being investigated by Opus for NZTA. As part of this project, a new cycle and pedestrian path will be incorporated into the bridge design, to connect in with the existing 'cycle clip on' on the Ngaruroro Bridge and connect with the existing Rotary Paths.

Interesting query from NZTA below.The background is that apparently the guys who look after signs andregulations (Stanley Chesterfield and Bob Gibson) are consideringchanging the permanent warning sign for cyclists to have a human beingshown in it. It's the only permanent warning sign that currentlydoesn't show a person.

Have had a chance to go through the guidelines to level 2 and offer these comments.

This is based on my experience as a trainer, consulting with other NZ trainers, CTUK (www.cycletraining.co.uk) and ViaStrada training (http://viastrada.co.nz/project/2007/training-course), the UK's Bikeability standards (www.bikeability.org.uk), many years of road cycling, and reference to the authoritative guide “Cyclecraft” by John Franklin (www.cyclecraft.co.uk).

The guidelines are an important step towards professional cycle training in New Zealand and have CAN's full support. We are keen to make them as good as possible.

What is the best way to provide a highway network for cyclists that is safe, convenient and attractive?

Should cyclists share space with motor traffic?

Should they share space with pedestrians?

Or should they have their own dedicated routes, and if so how can that be made to happen within reasonable cost?
